The Moderation Process

What you receive:

  • a minimum of two moderator visits
  • one to one advice and guidance
  • experience and knowledge gained from other centres

The Process

All centres within the same consortia share the same Line of Learning moderator and a visit is arranged with the Domain assessor. Before the first visit centres are required to review all work that will be available for the Moderator to inspect and discuss consortia plans for internally assessed units.

When the Moderator makes their first visit they check:

  • controlled assessments for internally assessed units
  • understanding of controlled conditions for task taking in relation to: time, resources, supervision and collaboration
  • marking of internal assessments
  • arrangements for internal standardisation
  • coverage of PLTS
  • coverage of Applied Learning

The Moderator will then provide advice, feedback and guidance. Following the first visit contact via telephone and/or email will be made.

The second visit then takes place during April/May

In consultation with the Domain Assessor, the moderator will specify the units required for moderation. These units must cover all of the different types of work required by the specification and a wide range of content and skills.

The moderator will determine the sample of candidates from each unit specified for moderation. The sample will consist of the completed work of at least 10 candidates from each of the units (or all candidates, if there are 10 or less).

Centres must submit their centre-assessed unit marks to the moderator when requested (prior to the Stage 2 visit) for candidates/units where work is completed, marked and internally standardised. Once the marks have been submitted to the moderator, the candidates must not carry out further work on the unit(s).units.

Before the second visit centres are required to:

  • ensure that controlled assessments have been undertaken in line with the information in the specification
  • apply the assessment grid to all learners work
  • ensure there is internal standardisation of marking
  • ensure all learners work is authenticated
  • have all appropriate candidate information up to date and available

When the moderator makes their second visit they:

  • will check that work is marked to the correct national standard
  • must see an adequate selection of completed work
  • will review completed units for a suitable sample of candidates
  • will inspect different types of work

Candidate record forms should be submitted by the consortium for each unit being moderated in this series.

All marks are required to be submitted by 31 May of each year.
