The Moderation Process

What you receive:

  • visit/postal advice and guidance
  • experience and knowledge gained from other centres

The Process
Essential moderation is free of charge involving direct support and advice to each consortium.

In their first year the moderator will check:

  • plans for controlled assessments for internally assessed units
  • understanding of controlled conditions for task taking
  • marking of internal assessments
  • arrangements for internal standardisation
  • coverage of PLTS
  • coverage of Applied Learning.

The moderator will then provide advice, feedback and guidance.

Annual moderation
This usually takes place in April or May. Depending on the nature of work produced the moderator may decide to require sample work be provided via the post. It may not be necessary for the moderator to visit the consortium. A discussion to this effect will be held between the moderator and the Domain Assessor.
Before annual moderation centres are required to:

  • agree with the moderator which units will be sampled
  • ensure tasks have been completed under the appropriate controlled conditions
  • mark all candidate's work for units which the moderator is to inspec
  • ensure that, where candidate's have worked in teams, the contribution of individual candidates can be identified
  • internally standardise the marking of units
  • provide work by post to the moderator for inspection, as required.

 The moderator will:

  • check that work is marked to the correct national standard
  • review an adequate selection of completed work
  • review completed units for a suitable sample of candidates
  • inspect different types of work.

Candidate record forms should be submitted by the consortium for each unit being moderated in this series.

All marks are required to be submitted by 31 May of each year.
