Construction and the Built Environment
Exploring the fabric and significance of the built environment, this Diploma provides learners with the underpinning knowledge and basic skills needed in a wide range of industry areas. From architecture and surveying to painting and decorating, the Construction and the Built Environment Diploma provides an understanding of how this key sector works from the inside out.
Developed by industry and education specialists the Diploma explores the built environment in terms of its economic, social and environmental impact on both individuals and communities. It also looks at the different demands made upon land use over time as well as the activities which shape, develop and influence the built environment.

Principal Learning overview
Principal Learning develops the knowledge, understanding and skills specific to each Line of Learning.
At Foundation level (level 1) learners will:
- explore the factors that influence the design process
- be introduced to different design principles and use them to create a realistic design for a specific building structure
- use hand tools and construction equipment safely to undertake basic operations
- explore traditional and modern construction methods
- understand the best ways to use new materials and methods to help sustain the built environment
- recognise the visual and social impact of the built environment
- understand the need for building maintenance and the importance of good design and workmanship
- be introduced to the different career opportunities available in the design and creation of the built environment
At Higher level (level 2) learners will:
- develop an understanding of planning requirements and their impact on design
- recognise the properties and uses of construction materials
- explore the application of design principles and apply acquired knowledge to the design of a complex structure
- gain an understanding of groundworks, substructure, superstructure and external works
- become aware of the hazards and risks commonly encountered in constructing the built environment
- explore the contribution the built environment makes to the physical, spiritual and emotional well-being as well as the economic prosperity of individuals and the community
- be introduced to facilities management and other support services
At Advanced level (level 3) learners will:
- consider the changes in style and attitude towards the built environment that have occurred over time, and the impact of political policies and priorities on design
- understand the individual stages of the design and planning processes and the principles involved in taking a design through the complete design cycle
- explore the health, safety and environmental factors that affect the design of the built environment
- understand how the natural environment can be protected and maintained during construction
- explore the construction processes used to create substructures and superstructures
- examine the role of stakeholders and the community in the development of the built environment
- understand how the fabric of buildings and structures can be protected from damage caused by elements and people
