Environmental and Land-Based Studies

The Environmental and Land-Based Studies Diploma is the ideal first choice for those who want to make a real difference to their own lives and the future of the world around them. It explores the broad diversity of the sector including: waste management; water services and conservation; crops and food production; sports; leisure and tourism; land management; forestry; animal health and welfare; landscaping; and environmental conservation.

This is an increasingly influential sector due to the growth in environmental awareness and interest in sustainable development. The Diploma focuses on both the underpinning knowledge as well as the key business skills that will enable learners and young entrepreneurs to meet the challenges and increasing demand for environmental and sustainable practices across all sectors. 

The Diploma can be studied at Foundation, Higher and Advanced levels and at every level learners will develop skills which will enable them to progress into further and higher education or employment.

Principal Learning

Principal Learning develops the knowledge, understanding and skills specific to each relevant Diploma

At Foundation level students will:

  • explore the environment and find out how it has been changed over time
  • understand how the environment is used in the modern world
  • discover the value of sustainable use and management of resources
  • gain awareness of the careers available and understand different job roles

At Higher level students will:

  • develop employability skills in the context of the environmental and land-based sectors
  • build skills that are needed for specific job roles
  • gain a broad understanding and working knowledge of the availability of natural resources
  • use common tools and equipment
  • acquire an awareness of environmental management methods

At Advanced level students will:

  • develop practical skills of social, economic and cultural value
  • understand the contribution of the environmental and land-based sectors to individuals and the community
  • explore the factors and principles influencing the design, creation, maintenance and management of environmental and land-based activities
