Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment
The Construction and Built Environment Diplomas provide a programme of applied and practical learning designed to introduce young people to the fabric of the built environment in which they live and study the significance of the built environment in terms of its economic, social and environmental impact on both individuals and communities; the different demands made upon land use over time and the nature of the activities which shape, develop and influence the built environment.
The content of the Diplomas is designed to produce a high quality learning experience that will:
- present learners with a comprehensive picture of the built environment
- encourage learners to consider why the built environment was designed and constructed as it has been, and how the built environment is used
- offer a wide range of applied learning opportunities and activities including individual and group work, field work, site investigations and structured visits
- provide opportunities to investigate, explore, analyse and review all aspects of the built environment by undertaking applied projects and practical tasks
- develop a broad range of personal, learning and thinking skills that will encourage learners to apply skills of enquiry, creativity, reflection, team work, self-management and effective participation in the study of the built environment
- offer a wide range of coherent opportunities to practise and acquire essential functional skills in English, Mathematics and ICT using the study of the built environment as the context in which delivery and assessment takes place
- offer information, guidance and advice on employment prospects, career pathways and the qualifications and experience needed to progress a career in the built environment sector
- provide a springboard to higher education through the investigation of specific vocational areas and disciplines associated with the built environment
