Society, Health and Development

The Diploma in Society, Health and Development provides an opportunity for learners to develop an understanding of the importance of these sectors and their role in the wider community. Covering key areas such as services for children and young people, health, community justice and social care, this Diploma will enable learners to gain an awareness and knowledge of the skills needed to deal with some of the most vulnerable members of society.

The Diploma explores issues such as valuing diversity, health, well-being and different lifestyles and allows learners to experience partnerships in practice and the ways agencies work together to provide services. Learners will also be made aware of the rewarding career opportunities that exist across these sectors.

Diploma levels

  • Foundation Diploma (Level 1) - equivalent on average to 5 GCSEs (600 guided learning hours)
  • Higher Diploma (Level 2) - equivalent on average to 7 GCSEs (800 guided learning hours)
  • Advanced Diploma (Level 3) - equivalent in terms of UCAS points to 3.5 A levels (1080 guided learning hours)

Principal Learning

Principal Learning develops the knowledge, understanding and skills specific to each Diplomas relevant industry sector.

At Foundation level students will:

  • develop an understanding of the purpose and structure of society, health and development
  • understand the impact of key legislation and codes of practice
  • understand the different partnerships within the community
  • develop skills for carrying out basic health and safety risk assessment for a specified setting
  • understand the stages of human growth and development

 At Higher level students will:

  • understand what is meant by delivering ‘good practice’
  • know why communication is of fundamental importance
  • develop an understanding of the importance of and responsibility for personal health, safety, security and risk assessment
  • recognise key physical, emotional, social and intellectual changes and developments that take place across the human life span
  • understand the cycle of assessment, planning, implementation and review
  • be introduced to the community justice sector
  • develop knowledge and understanding of the broad overall structure of the Children’s Workforce
  • study the basic structure of the health sector and its patient-centred approach

At Advanced level students will:

  • research similarities and differences in the purpose, structure and practical working of the sector
  • challenge discrimination and ‘poor practice’ by promoting equal opportunities and valuing diversity
  • further develop their understanding of partnerships and highlight the role that individuals, groups and organisations play in improving service provision
  • value the importance of promoting and protecting the health, safety and security of individuals and society
